What Parents Want to Know About School Choice: Tips for Reporters

At EWA's 66th National Seminar, held at Stanford last month, we examined the challenge of how reporters can best evaluate charter school research in a session moderated by the Huffington Post's Joy Resmovits. We asked some of the education reporters attending the seminar to contribute blog posts from the sessions. Today's guest blogger is Kara Newhouse of the Perry County (Penn.) Times . The full podcast of the session can be found hereStream any session from National Seminar in your browser, or subscribe via RSS or iTunes.

“Whether people like or choice or don’t like choice, it’s a reality,” said Gail Robinson of Inside Schools as she opened an EWA session on how reporters can assess schools' efforts to inform parents about public school choice options.

Bill Jackson of Great Schools joined her in the discussion. Both speakers' organizations mine school data and share that information—along with parent and student comments—online. Great Schools does so for schools

Dr. Sanders, Dr. James Taylor and Lee Barios will discuss the Louisiana connection between John White, inBloom, other data collection entities and why it is an essential part of the Common Core Standards/curriculum/high stakes testing regime.
One of many controversies at the Louisiana Department of Education is Superintendent John White’s decision to give personal student data to for-profit companies (which violate the federal student privacy policy). Over the past few months White has not been clear on what’s going on regarding this issue, on occasion he has denied that there was agreement with these companies and other times he has defended giving companies the personal student data. Last week White once again brought the idea up before at a BESE Board meeting. This decision

Washington voters have decided they want to add charter schools to the education mix in the state, and the three largest districts are taking different approaches to the question: What should charter schools mean to our community?
Seattle has decided to basically ignore the question for now; Tacoma is still learning and exploring; and Spokane has jumped in with both feet.
Spokane Superintendent Shelley Redinger said districts that do not embrace the possibility of charter schools may have the issue forced on them.
“We don’t want divisiveness,” said Redinger, who experienced a similar transition in Oregon at a previous job. She moved back to Washington in 2012 and says the approach districts take now matters.

Misogynist rapper/charter school operator Armando Perez, AKA Pitbull, has announced that Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein will guest on his next cd.

Pitbull, who has worked with famed artists like Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, and Enrique Iglesias on his albums, told Education Week that he is very excited to be working with two of his biggest education reform heroes on his next cd.

"Listen, I met these guys at some education reform thing and we were in the club after, you know, just hanging, bottle in each hand, when Arne says 'Hey, man, I love that thing you did with Enrique, that song Come and Go!  What do you think about me and Joel doing a song with you on your next album?'"

Educators Discuss Creating an Inclusive Environment for LGBTQ Students

Dr. Molly Merryman fought for an LGBTQ student center at Kent State University.
Molly MerrymanSAN FRANCISCO—While serving on a search committee for a new vice president for diversity and inclusion at Kent State University, Dr. Molly Merryman began inquiring about the absence of campus space set aside for gay and lesbian students. After all, students of color already had designated spaces and centers.
Before long, a university official offered Merryman an unused room for an LGBTQ student center that was established in 2010.
“We agreed that I would find a way to staff the center and allow the new vice president to take credit for it as her first new initiative,” Merryman said. “By gifting the center to this vice president, we utilized the existing transition at Kent State to get something important done.”
Merryman’s remarks came last week during the annual summer institute, “Expanding the Circle: Creating an Inclusive Environment in Higher Education for LGBTQ Students and Studies.” Educators from more than 60

Miami Herald: Tampering With School Grade Formula “Unfair” and Causes “An Inaccurate and Misleading Portrayal”

From the editors of the Miami Herald:
Too many students are being set up to think they are failures by the very people who say they are pushing students to excel. Their teachers will see their hard work in front of the class undercut. And parents will think, wrongly, that their children are attending substandard schools.
In a state system that rewards high-scoring schools with more money and penalizes lower-performing schools by withholding funds, the new state standards will do damage not just to institutions of learning. The quality of schools is a large factor in home values. An “A” school that plummets to a “C” will ding values throughout a neighborhood.
Florida wants its students to perform ever better on standardized tests such as the FCAT — a
