Single fathers head record number of households with children

Single fathers, a longtime trope of TV sitcoms, are now the reality for a growing number of kids’ homes.
According to a Pew Research Center analysis of census data, there are nine times as many single father households as of 2011 than there were in 1960. In comparison, the number of single mother households has increased more than fourfold. In 1960, about 14 percent of single parent homes were headed by fathers. Today, almost one in four are.
According to the report single fathers typically have less education and income than married dads. They are more likely than single mothers to be living with a cohabiting partner. However, they tend to have higher incomes than single mothers.
Overall, two-thirds of households with children are headed by two married parents.
